After making great personal sacrifices over the past two seasons, veteran National Hockey League forward Daniel Cleary has announced that he will be stepping away from professional hockey.

According to a report from Ted Kuflan of the Detroit News, Cleary made the announcement following a huge Calder Cup win for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.

Cleary spent the entire 2016-2017 season as a member of the Griffins after failing to live up to expectations as a member of the Red Wings roster. That being said, he was by all accounts an incredibly positive influence in the Griffins locker room, and will be leaving with his head held high after a huge championship win.

His NHL career ends with 935 games played in which he recorded 165 goals and 222 assists for a total of 387 career points. We wish him all the best on his future endeavors.
