We reported earlier tonight that Bruins' rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy left the game against the Montreal Canadiens early in the first period, because of a lower-body injury. We didn't have much more information than that before a Colin Beswick, a journalist who covers the Boston Bruins, posted a video of Habs' forward Brendan Gallagher slashing the 20-year-old blueliner.

Just take a look at the footage:

However, Beswick mentions a few minutes later that Gallagher's slash might not actually be the direct cause of McAvoy's injury. He says there is a possibility he hurt himself while falling:

On the other hand, NBC Sports' Joe Haggerty is adamant: Gallagher has definitely caused McAvoy's injury:

We could also read on Haggs' Twitter account that "Charlie McAvoy exited the bench area after one 37-second shift in the first period and went right to the dressing room. Hasn't been seen since. Zdeno Chara took his next shift with Brandon Carlo."

McAvoy has just been stunning this season. He amassed seven goals and 25 assists for 32 points in 58 games in his first year with the Bruins. Let's just hope his injury isn't too serious.

Boston trails 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. Bruce Cassidy's team still won 12 of 17 faceoffs, good for 71 per cent.

UPDATE:

It looks like Gallagher's slash didn't actually catch McAvoy directly, which means he probably hurt himself while falling. Beswick adds that he "must have twisted something or landed awkwardly."

What's your take on this whole situation? Do you think Gallagher intentionally tried to hurt our rookie blueliner?
