The announcement may not have come from the National Hockey League, but we feel comfortable stating that the news everyone has expected for months now has been made official.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the NHL has settled on the city of Las Vegas, Nevada during it's current expansion process and that the city will be hosting an NHL team in the 2017-2018 season.

From the Associated Press release:

A person with direct knowledge of the NHL’s decision says the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion, provided organizers can come up with a $500 million fee.

The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting on June 22. Quebec City was also considered for expansion.

A second person who had been briefed on the decision said Las Vegas was a “done deal” following the recommendation of the NHL’s executive committee.

Meanwhile no word on Quebec City's expansion bid, but seemingly from the very beginning there has been little to no belief that the Canadian city will get another team.
