Breaking: Wild claims D-man off waivers amidst All-Star festivities

The Minnesota Wild is keeping busy despite all of the All-Star festivities taking place on Friday by claiming a player off waivers.

The Nashville Predators placed defenseman Anthony Bitetto on the waiver wire on Thursday, and the Wild claimed him off on Friday, a few hours before the Skills competition in San Jose.

Bitetto has served as a healthy scratch for 10 consecutive outings and has been limited to just 18 appearances this season with the Preds. When he had made it to the lineup, he has averaged a mere 10:40 of ice time.

The 28-year-old blue liner carries a cap hit of just $650,000 and will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, the Wild has decided to give him a chance to see how he could fit in their lineup for the remainder of the season. He could slot into the Wild's lineup right away after the All-Star break. It is to be noted however that Minnesota awaits the return of defender Matt Dumba, who should return shortly from a pectoral injury.

The Predators had been carrying eight defensemen for most of the season and placed Bitetto on waivers in hopes to assign him to AHL Milwaukee in order to make room for Kyle Turris (lower body) or Miikka Salomaki (upper body) to be activated off injured reserve.

He will however continue his NHL path in Minnesota for now.
