Breaking: Wings at risk of losing young player after placing him on waivers.

The Detroit Red Wings have taken a calculated risk.

The Wings are now the latest team to use what has been a jam-packed waiver process this week after they placed 25-year-old defenseman Alexey Marchenko on the waiver wire.

Marchenko was the Wings' 7th round draft pick in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft and despite appearing in 30 games for Detroit this seasons and putting up respectable numbers in the process the Wings decided waivers were worth the risk, presumably with the intention of demoting him to the American Hockey League.

That being said a lot of teams are currently searching for defensive depth, and a 25-year-old who counts for less than $1.5 million against the cap could very well be the type of asset that is claimed.
