Breaking: Wings recall a 20-goal scorer from their farm team!
Keystone

Ahead to tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, the Detroit Red Wings have called up veteran forward Ben Street.

Street, 30, singed a one-year deal with the Red Wings at the beginning of the season after the Colorado Avalanche passed on resigning the versatile forward. He has spent the entire season in the AHL, where he has been have a great year with 23 goals and 28 assists for 51 points in 57 games.

The left-handed shot from Coquitlam, British Columbia has primarily been a 4th line role-player, bouncing between the AHL and NHL since he broke into the league in the 2012-13 season. What Street brings to the table is a diverse mix of playmaking ability and hockey sense, supplemented by a heavy slapper.

Street is the definition of a low-risk player that Detroit’s coaching staff can trust to munch minutes in pretty much any situation they throw him into. What he may lack in flash, he can make up for with solid, responsible play.

The Red Wings are a bit thin on the depth chart thanks to injuries that have sidelined Ryan Sproul, Darren Helm, and Jonathan Ericsson. Of those three, only Helm has a chance of returning this season.

Street may get a chance to transfer his AHL success to the NHL level as the Red Wings pay the Habs a visit in this original-six matchup tonight.
