We don’t know if either the Calgary Flames or the Boston Bruins are playing hard to get, however, it is believed that both teams have had talks about a potential trade involving defenseman Noah Hanifin, according to The Fourth Period.
It has been reported that Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has been weighing options on the trade market in order to add a left-shooting defenseman to his roster ever since Boston lost Torey Krug as a free agent to the St. Louis Blues in October. What is being heard in trade circles is that the Bruins narrowed their interest for Hanifin, he who has four years left on his current six-year, $29.7 million contract and comes with a $4.95 million salary cap hit.
Pundits now believe talks have been on hold while the focus gets back to the start of the 2021 season, which is expected to kick off on Jan. 13, 2021 providing both the National Hockey League and its Players Association finalize details on a campaign and if the NHL Board of Governors and NHLPA Executive Committee approve the deal.
Then, some say talks between the Flames and the Bruins, involving Hanifin, could get back on the table, closer to the start of the season.
On top of that, the Flames are believed to be interested in Bruins forward Ondrej Kase, who is in the final year of his contract and can become a restricted free agent next off-season. He was added to the Bruins’ roster back in February when he arrived in Boston via David Backes trade for David Backes.
The Bruins would need to shed salary to take on Hanifin’s deal. The 23-year-old would be a good addition to Boston, he who recorded five goals and 17 assists for 22 points in 70 games with the Flames last season.
