It’s been mentioned more than once in recent weeks that the Boston Bruins need to acquire additional scoring depth ahead of the postseason. The team came so close to winning the Stanley Cup last summer; it wants to do everything it can to be the champions this time around.

That’s why it is believed the Bruins are shopping for an offensive boost, but according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney can get Los Angeles Kings’ forward Tyler Toffoli, if he’s not traded somewhere else, any time they want.

“I’ll tell you this, I do think Boston, if they wanted to, could do a deal for Toffoli almost at any time. I think they know they’ve got that in their hip pocket,” Friedman said on the 31 Thoughts podcast on Sportsnet with Jeff Marek. “So the question is: do you do that or do you wait for (Chris) Kreider?”

New York Rangers’ Chris Kreider has also been targeted by the Bruins, but is expected to cost more than Toffoli will. The Rangers might also chose to keep Kreider, depending on where they stand closer to the deadline.

Kreider, who has 14 goals and 15 assists in 43 games this season, is expected to command a hefty return, more than what it could take to acquire Toffoli, who is of little use to the Kings. Los Angeles is also entering the rebuild mode and would agree to receive a high draft pick or a high-level prospect for his services.

And it seems like Sweeney could make it happen anytime he wants!
