In today's league, the salary cap is an everyday worry. Resigning skilled players to the lowest salary possible or securing promising rookies for many years literally keep GMs up at night. The Bruins are making a hard push for the Stanley Cup this year, but one of their rising star might go to the bank in a big way next year.

David Pastrnak is a 2014 first rounder who had two decent first years with the team and the AHL affiliate. However, this year has been exceptional for him. With 63 points in 64 games, he has a pace similar to a lot of stars in the league. The actual NHL leader is teammate Brad Marchand, with 79 points.

Pastrnak entry level contract will end this year and the next one will make him rich. A Twitter blogger extracted data from similar players in the league to give us an idea.

The lower expected range would be about 5.5M$ a year and the upper range is 7.5M$. The excellent website Spotrac informs us on the Bruins' cap space of next year and some things are worrisome for them. They have to sign at least 7 players with an available cap space of 17.4M$. With the hypothesis that Pastrnak accepts a 6.5M$ contract, the Bruins will have less than 11M$ to sign 6 players. Granted, the only big name turning UFA is Drew Stafford for about 4.5M$, but the puzzle will be complicated to solve.
