The Boston Bruins blue line has taken a significant hit with the absence of veteran defenseman Torey Krug and now it sounds like the Bruins expect him to miss additional time.

According to an official announcement from the Bruins organization on Saturday the team has placed Krug on injured reserve as a result of the injury he suffered all the way back on November 10th against the Philadelphia Flyers. Now normally a designation on injured reserve is an indication that a player will miss at least a week of action, however it is unclear at this time if Krug has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to the 10th of November or not. Were that to be the case then Krug could be back in the lineup for the Bruins as early as next week, but if not we could expect Krug to be out until next weekend at the very least.

The news is just the latest bit of bad news for the Bruins who have been dealing with a laundry list of injuries as of late to players like Kevan Miller, David Backes, Jake DeBrusk and more. Additionally given that Krug is a strong fixture of the Bruins power play this move not only weakens the Bruins at 5 on 5 but also gives them a considerable disadvantage on special teams as well. Krug was off to a pretty good start on the season on top of that. Although he does currently sit with a plus minus rating of -4 on the season Krug has also accumulated 2 goals and 11 assists for a total of 13 points in his first 17 games. Strong numbers from the blue line to be sure.

With Krug placed on injured reserve that has opened up a spot on the Bruins roster and the Bruins have announced a corresponding call up to go along with Krug being placed on injured reserve. Interestingly enough the Bruins have called up a forward in the form of NHL veteran Paul Carey from the American Hockey League and it will be interesting to see where Carey slots into the line up this evening and who head coach Bruce Cassidy will move around on his roster prior to the Bruins facing the Washington Capitals.
