Bruins the only team active on waivers Sunday.

Bruins waive a veteran.

It feels like things have been relatively quiet on the waiver wire throughout the regular season thus far, although that may simply be my own perception of things, and if I had to guess it comes due to the fact that so many teams around the league have seen their rosters decimated by Covid and the National Hockey League's Covid protocols.

In spite of that however on Sunday we saw the Boston Bruins place a veteran forward on waivers and for the exact reasons I mentioned above I do wonder about whether or not he may end up being claimed. According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Bruins have placed 26 year old centerman Karson Kuhlman on waivers, a player that they have already called upon several times this season.

Although by most standards Kuhlman would be considered a fringe NHL player, having appeared in just 75 total NHL games since his NHL debut during the 2018 - 2019 season, the circumstances surrounding this season have seen him playing more than normal. Kuhlman has made 19 appearances for the Bruins in the 2021 - 2022 regular season thus far and over that stretch he has picked up a goal and an assist for 2 total points and a plus minus rating of 0 on the season. Kuhlman also hasn't put the Bruins in any kind of trouble when out on the ice, picking up no penalty minutes in spite of playing in a depth role over the course of several games this season.

Teams looking to add some depth to their lineup, possibly even just for the eventuality of having players sidelined due to Covid, won't have to worry too much about fitting Kuhlman under the cap either. The forward is in the 2nd year of a 2 year contract that carries a cap hit of just $725,000 per season. Even better for teams looking to keep him around beyond this season, he will be a restricted free agent at the end of his current deal as well.

He won't be a game changer if claimed, but no doubt the Bruins have made this move knowing full well that he may be gone when waiver claims come in tomorrow.
