Brutal elbow in AIHL fight earns player lengthy suspension

If you’ve never heard of the Australian Ice Hockey League before, you’re not alone. The eight team league has been in existence nearly 20 years and plays its regular season over what traditionally is the summer months for us in the northern hemisphere, but of course Australia is currently in the middle of winter.

Oh, and it’s a bush league. While fighting is actually punished quite severely in the league, it doesn’t seem to prevent the rough stuff. Just check out this scrap between Sydney Ice Dogs’ David Dunwoodie and Melbourne Ice’s Joseph Hughes in which Hughes drops a brutal elbow onto the back of Dunwoodie while he has him tied up:

I’ve heard of an elbowing major before, but that’s ridiculous. Unsurprisingly, Hughes received a match penalty and was ejected from the game. His suspension hasn’t yet been announced, but broadcasters in the clip can be heard speculating that he’ll be out for 4-5 games at least. Brutal.
