Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning turned ugly very early on on Friday night.

Lightning forward Ryan Callahan earned himself a 5 minute major after a devastating hit to the back of Pittsburgh #1 defenseman Kris Letang. Callahan appeared to drive his elbow into the back of Letang's head, driving it and his entire body into the boards resulting in a brutal impact for Letang. Letang stayed down on the ice for several moments, and was understandably still wobbly when he finally got back to his feet, leaning on the trainer as he head to the back.

Callahan was not ejected for the hit, and it will be interesting to watch how the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety reacts to this hit, if it reacts at all.
