We already knew it was amazing that Team Canada captain Barrett Hayton made it to the final game of the World Junior Championship last weekend, but the information provided by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on Thursday makes it more extraordinary. 

The young forward is actually is listed as week-to-week with a Grade 1 AC shoulder injury. Hayton was recalled by the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday after winning gold at the World Junior Championship last weekend, but is facing a long recovery. 


The 19-year-old finished second in tournament scoring with six goals and 12 points in seven games. No one expected him to be in uniform to play in the final game after he took a hard fall into the boards during the third period of Canada’s semifinal game against Finland. He was first listed as questionable for the gold medal game, but Hayton made it and scored the tying goal in the third period against Russia. Canada went on to win the title contest 4-3.

This new information on his injury speaks volume on the kid’s courage and determination!
