The Vancouver Canucks have called up goalie prospect Mike DiPietro. It is the first time the 19-year-old netminder has been called up in the NHL.

The Canucks explained in a statement that the prospect is being summoned from the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's on an "emergency basis." Defenseman Guillaume Brisebois also was called up from the American Hockey League's Utica Comets.

DiPietro has split his season between the 67's and the Windsor Spitfires, posting a 18-10-1 record, a .908 save percentage and a 2.37 goals-against average. He was also Canada's starting goalie at this year's World junior championship in Vancouver.

The move was needed after Canucks backup netminder Thatcher Demko suffered a lower-body injury during a pre-game skate on Monday. The team said in a tweet Tuesday that he has traveled back to Vancouver for an MRI.

Jacob Markstrom is expected to start in net for Vancouver on Tuesday against the Capitals in Washington.

As for Brisebois, he expected to slot into the roster on Tuesday as veteran defenseman Alex Edler is sidelined with a concussion. In last night's 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, Edler was carted off on a stretcher after being bloodied during a game. Edler crashed face-first to the ice midway through the third period of a 2-1 loss. The terrifying injury took place when Edler’s skate got caught in the stick of  Flyers' Jakub Voracek, causing Edler to lose his balance and slam face first into the ice.

Edler has traveled back to Vancouver and will be out at least a week.

The 21-year-old Brisebois has put up nine points in 45 AHL games this season.
