Ouch. A tough blow for a team that's teetering on the edge of a playoff spot.

This just in, Vancouver Canucks head coach has confirmed that forward Micheal Ferland is dealing with post-concussion symptoms and that rookie goalie Thatcher Demko also suffered a concussion in practice. As a result, Michael DiPietro has been called up from the Utica Comets to replace Demko, while Zack MacEwen  was called up to replace Ferland yesterday.

Check it out:

While there’s no confirmation on what exactly happened with Ferland, it’s worthwhile noting that he left the game shortly after delivering this hit on Toronto Maple Leafs forward (and North Vancouver native) Alex Kerfoot on Tuesday evening:

The 27 year old Ferland has struggled to stay healthy in his first season with the Canucks, but has been effective when in the lineup. His physical play and energy is apparent whenever he’s on the ice, but he’s also managed to chip in offensively with five points in 14 games played.

As for Demko, he’s been a revelation in his first full season of NHL hockey. The 24 year old has arguably been the top rookie goaltender in the NHL this season, although his game has slipped a bit in recent outings.
