Canucks owner makes weird statement in attempt to kill ongoing rumors

Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini use his own Twitter account on Tuesday to put an end to ongoing rumours about management change or addition.

While chatter didn’t seem to be all that loud about Jim Benning parting ways with the Canucks or the team hiring a new president of hockey operations, Aquilini sure made everyone aware about the rumors when he posted the following comments on his Twitter account:

“I want to correct erroneous media reports that I tried to hire Dean Lombardi. In fact, I’ve never spoken to Dean Lombardi in my life.”

A few days ago, Benning informed the Vancouver Province that Aquilini had called him and said: “Despite all the talk out there, he’s not looking to hire somebody as a president of hockey operations.”

In that same article, The Province revealed that “it’s accepted Aquilini offered the job to former Kings’ GM Dean Lombardi a couple of times last off-season and was rejected.”

Last summer, the Canucks and president of hockey operations Trevor Linden “amicably” agreed to part ways. Since his departure, no one has taken over the role, which could explain why Vancouver is after a management change or addition.

However, Aquilini clearly states he’s never been in touch with Lombardi.

Lombardi, who built Stanley Cup champions in Los Angeles, is now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers still looking to help new GM Chuck Fletcher made contenders out of the team.

A few weeks ago when the Ottawa Senators were mentioned as a possible destination for Lombardi, the 61-year-old man revealed he wasn’t looking to move and wanted to stay and build a strong future in Philly.

He won’t be heartbroken by Aquilini’s comments today…
