Capitals insider shares big update on Alex Ovechkin trade rumors.

Almost immediately following another dissappointing playoff exit from the Washington Capitals, the topic of conversation switched to the possibility of a trade involving franchise superstar Alex Ovechkin.

This has been no minor talking point either, with pundits on both sides of the border making their thoughts known and with the large consensus appearing to suggestst that the time has come for the Capitals to pull the trigger on a deal involving Ovechkin.

However one of the sources closest to the team has a very different take on  what the Capitals will do moving forward, and on Thursday the Washington Post's Isabelle Khurshudyan stated that "the Capitals would almost certainly never do it."

While you can certainly argue that as a hockey trade there is certainly room to discuss this deal making a lot of sense for the Capitals, however Khurshudyan points to ownership and Ted Leonis as a giant roadblock to such a deal.

From the Washington Post:

In the real world, the deal would probably die there. While the Capitals have changed coaches and general managers during Ovechkin’s tenure in Washington, he and Leonsis have been constants, developing a relationship over that time. “That seems to be the new wave now, that the franchise players and the owners become friends, which is really great for the GM by the way,” former NHL general manager Doug MacLean quipped sarcastically.

When you add this factor to the fact that this would already be an extremely difficult trade to pull off it may be too much for any general manager to execute, that is unless of course some team comes to the Capitals with some kind of absolutely ridiculous offer they can't refuse, but that seems unlikely even for a player like Ovechkin.

That's not to say that this deal is entirely impossible, even Khurshudyan stopped short of saying that and merely said it would "almost certainly" not happen, but this rumor seems far more like a pipe dream than a reality at this point.
