Captain Gionta in the race for coveted award!

Brian Gionta has been in the league for a long time and his presence and stature is recognized by many. He played for 15 seasons thus far and his skills, leadership and overall impact are well known.

Today, we learned that he was nominated as the Sabres' candidate for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

As per Wikipedia, here's what that trophy truly means.

''The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. It is named after Bill Masterton, the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game. The winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association after each team nominates one player in competition.''

Of course, the trophy is not as sexy as the Hart or the Maurice Richard, but winning it means a lot to the player picked.

Good luck in the race, Brian!
