Chaos in Philadelphia as security tries to apprehend a streaking Gritty!

I have to admit I hated the Gritty mascot when it was first unveiled by the Philadelphia Flyers. I thought it looked silly and didn't do a very good job of relating to the Flyers franchise at all, but I have to admit that the terrific job the Flyers have done of marketing the obese fuzz ball has really won me over with time.

On Saturday night the Philadelphia Flyers faced off against their bitter interstate rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins in what turned out to be a pretty good game as part of the National Hockey League's Stadium Series. The outdoor game featured a back and forth contest between the two rivals teams that including some nice goals and some big hits in spite of the awful weather that was taking place during the game itself.

That being said though as good as the game itself was a lot of the talk after the game has been focused in on the aforementioned Flyers mascot and his antics prior to the game. In fact it was Gritty who kicked the game off with what was honestly a rather spectacular entrance from the top of the stadium, one that genuinely put the man inside the costume in danger as he rappelled down to the stadium floor from way on up in the air. The whole thing was set to the "Rocky" theme which of course was quite endearing to the Philadelphia crowd, but that may not have even been Gritty's best moment of the day.

Gritty also gave the security at the Stadium Series  a hard time earlier in the day when he decided that, in spite of all the women and innocent children in attendance on the day, he would go streaking across the stadium floor at Lincoln Financial Field. It made for a rather hilarious spectacle, watching a mascot that obviously has none of the organs that would normally make such an activity controversial attempting to get a rise out of the audience and the fans watching along at home.

The little comical skit also produced some excellent chirps from Penguins fans who were quick to point out that Gritty didn't have a whole lot going on downstairs.
