Chara nabs nomination with quality play this season!
Keystone

Zdeno Chara has been the captain of the Boston Bruins since 2006, and his latest award nomination is further proof of why this was the right choice more than a decade later.

Chara was nominated by his team for the Bill Masterton Trophy, the award for the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

The big man has had stats that are as impressive as his long tenure as leader of the Bruins. Chara has the most games played amongst active Boston players (813), highest +/- record (plus-170), power play goals (67) and power play points (163), minutes per game (25:14), and perhaps most important to Bruins fans he leads in hits (1,707) and penalty minutes (872).

While his on-ice stats and persona are what Chara is known for the most, his local charitable contributions have made him a hero to many in the Boston area. He is the face that drives a number of huge charity organizations that the Bruins are involved with, including Cradles to Crayons, the Boston Bruins Foundation, the Tufts Medical Center, and the Bruins Holiday Toy Delievery to children’s hospitals.

The 40-year-old Stanley Cup champion and Norris Trophy winner has lost a few games to injury this season, but has still manged to put up 8 goals and 16 assists for 24 points in 68 games. Despite slowing down a bit with age Chara’s defensive game hasn’t stalled, his +/- of plus-18 this season is testament to that.

Many oversized players aren’t expected to last to long in any sport, but Chara’s career has spanned almost two decades.

He’s been leading Boston for half that time, and his dedication to his team and the game is just as big as ever.
