While there is a lot of action taking place in the NHL tonight, the attention is turned on the AHL’s game between the Chicago Wolves and the Grand Rapids Griffins.

During the first period of the contest, young forward Tyler Wong was the victim of a brutal illegal hit by Griffins defenseman Dylan McIlrath, who was selected in the first round, 10th overall in the 2010 NHL draft.

Wong did not see McIlrath come his way and was caught off guards with a check to the head. The blue liner was ejected from the game while several medical trainers rushed to Wong’s side to get him on a stretcher and out of the arena.

A tough hit to watch:

The official blew the play dead immediately and wrestled McIlrath to the ground before the Wolves could get to him. They also needed to make sure Wong was safe and attended to by the medical trainers.

An interesting fact about the two players by Pete Wallner is that: Tyler Wong is 5-9, 176 and Dylan McIlrath is 6-4, 235. Big difference!

Several Wolves skated over to tap Wong as he exited the ice, and the crowd offered a genuine round of applause in support of the young forward.

Let’s all keep Wong in our thoughts and prayers. We never like to see a player go out like this…
