Coach Claude Julien has never been the kind of coach to sit idly by and watch as one of his players is the recipient of criticism. After the hit that Dennis Seidenberg delivered to Jonathan Toews in the second period of Thursday's game between the Blackhawks and Bruins, many called for a suspension calling it a "dirty hit". Like any good coach, Claude Julien came to the defence of Seidenberg, taking a totally different stance on how these hits should be handled by the NHL. After the game Julien said: "I’ve been saying…for a long time, we need to educate our players to protect themselves better. We keep turning our backs, we keep trying to curl away. A player’s job is to finish his check and a player should know he’s going to be hit. It’s not about tonight, it’s about the whole league. I’m one of those guys who has put a lot of pressure on people who look at those kind of things and say, ‘It’s OK to take away those hits from hits from behind when they’re warranted. But what about the other guy? Does he not have a responsibility?" For their part the NHL has decided not to pursue the matter any further and Seidenberg will not receive supplementary discipline for the hit.
