In case you missed it last night, Alex Ovechkin unofficially claimed the NHL’s heavyweight championship belt last tonight.

Midway through the first period of last night’s pivotal Game 3 between the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals, Ovechkin absolutely TUNED UP Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov, sending the kid crumpling to the ice.

During the first intermission legendary CBC broadcaster Don Cherry issued a warning to anyone who thinks they’ll handle Ovechkin in a fight… be prepared:






Immediately after the game, in which the Hurricanes won handily 5-0, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour was critical of Ovechkin, calling him out for taking on a rookie.

I get where Brind’Amour is coming from but… Svechnikov knew what he was getting into. If you’re willing to stand and trade rights with Ovechkin… you have to know that you’re going to get popped.
