Everyone is preoccupied by the upcoming Playoffs for good reasons, but the UFA and RFA market will be opened soon enough too. The off-season is the moment for teams and player to fix leaks and find a new place to call home.
That's exactly what Cody Franson did today, even before the season ended. The big defenseman was pretty clear about his intentions.
Now this is as clear as it gets. His 3,325M$ contract is set to end in a few weeks and he will not rejoin the Sabres for sure after such comments. Burning bridges like that make things a bit tougher for his agent.
It might be an interesting pick for the Leafs, as Franson would add weight at the blue line for them. However, things have changed a lot in Toronto since he left in 2015. It's not a sure thing that his declining speed would fight well in the Matthews' era. Moreover, his 19 points in 65 games are a far cry from his past production with the Leafs back in the days. Granted, he's not an offensive defenseman but still, you need to earn that salary.
Anyhow, it's still a nice breath of fresh air to hear a player claim publicly his real intentions. Good luck with that, Cody!
