If you've been following the Detroit Red Wings even casually as of late you are likely aware of the fact that Jonathan Ericsson has been a lightning rod for criticism, something that was amplified last season when it was rumored some of his high profile countrymen had demanded he get more ice time on the team.

Ericsson hasn't helped himself either, struggling over the past two seasons, and although he claimed this week that it was a result of a nagging hip injury, his comments almost lead you to believe he expects to be even worse this season.

“We’ll see how it goes," said Ericsson as per the Detroit Free Press. "It gets a little worse every year. There's arthritis in there, too.”

Of course corrective surgery has been an option on the table this entire time, but for whatever reason Ericsson would prefer by his own admission to let his condition deteriorate than get the work done.

“It's not 100%,” Ericsson said. “I want to have that as a last out.”

The problem of course is if this does become to much to deal with during the regular season, he would need four months of recovery following the surgery. Something tells us the criticism of Jonathan Ericsson may not be going away anytime soon.
