Concerning news for Leafs following meeting between Nylander and Dubas

In case you missed it, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reported yesterday that Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas had flown to Switzerland to meet with unsigned restricted free agent William Nylander in an attempt to bridge the gap between the two sides and come to terms on a new deal.

Check out these quotes from Horby’s column for The Sun yesterday morning:

A source told the Toronto Sun that Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is in Switzerland on Wednesday for a meeting with Nylander and his representatives, with a Dec. 1 deadline looming to sign the restricted free agent. Switzerland would serve as a neutral locale for the summit, with Nylander having been training in Sweden on his own to date.

Well, according to multiple reports, Dubas is now back in Toronto, while Nylander remains in Europe where he’s been practicing with a team based out of Austria. No deal? No deal.

If you wondered whether Leafs GM Kyle Dubas was back from Switzerland after his summit with William Nylander. I have it from an unimpeachable source that he is.......that would be me, since I saw him walking down a busy Toronto street moments ago.

The two sides are reportedly still far apart on dollar figures, but have come to an agreement on a long term deal. It’s expected that Nylander’s new deal, if and when it ever gets signed will be for seven or even eight seasons. Of course, there’s always the possibility of a shorter “bridge” deal and that seems more and more likely the longer negotiations drag on.

So, while there may not be any good news to come out of The Swiss Summit for Leafs fans, it still seems like contract negotiations are inching towards a conclusion.

Again, check out these quotes from Hornby:

The betting is the Nylander camp is getting antsy at the growing public perception he is asking for too much money and that the Leafs can go on without him or trade him. Club president Brendan Shanahan’s suggestion that Nylander take a home-town discount so the Leafs can fit Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner into a Stanley Cup-contending window the next few years also likely ruffled feathers.

While you might think that Leafs fans have been getting cranky over the lack of progress in negotiations, Sportsnet radio personalities Tim and Sid seem to be having some fun with things:
