On Saturday news broke that Edmonton Oilers forward Colby Cave had suddenly and shockingly passed away at the young age of 25 years old. The news of such a young man losing his life, a professional athlete at his athletic prime no less, sent shockwaves through the hockey world and has resulted in some very emotional reactions from literally hundreds of people around the league. Although this will come as little comfort to Cave's loved ones, the sheer outpouring of support today is an indication that Cave's short life was one that left a major impact on those he came into contact with.

One such person who reacted to the terrible news on Saturday was none other than Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. McDavid no doubt will be one of the men tasked with supporting grieving teammates at this time, although that situation will almost certainly be complicated by efforts to keep social distancing a top priority at this time. As you would expect McDavid's message was one that spoke of both pain and confusion, no doubt emotions that will be extremely common when it comes to the passing of such a young and promising man.

In an effort to preserve the integrity of his message, here is the statement from McDavid unedited and in full:

Just doesn’t make any sense ... Heavy heavy heart today as I try to wrap my head around this. You were an amazing person and always brought so much energy and positivity into the room and in peoples lives. You will be deeply missed Caver. Sending all my love to Emily and the entire Cave family through this difficult time.
