Controversial head coach Bill Peters lands new coaching job during shutdown

It may feel like it happened ages ago, but it was in November, during the now paused 2019-20 NHL season, that former Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters was fired for having allegedly used a racial epithet to describe the music that Akim Aliu was listening to at the time, during the 2009-10 season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL.

On top of that were accusations of physical abuse on two players while he was the bench boss with the Carolina Hurricanes. Former Canes player Michal Jordan confirmed to TSN that there were “multiple” physical altercations between Peters and players in Carolina.
As you may remember now, it got ugly fast and Peters lost his job and we sort of forgot about it, thinking he would never get a job behind a bench again.

However, his controversial history has not stopped Yekaterinburg Avtomobilist in the KHL from offering him a job.

On Wednesday, it was officially announced that Peters landed the gig.

Back in March, Oilers insider Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal had revealed on Twitter that Peters was being considered for the head coaching with Yekaterinburg in the KHL. Matheson had explained that former NHL Russia superstar Pavel Datsyuk may have recommended the for Detroit Red Wings assistant coach.

Since allegations were made on Peters, and former Toronto Maple Leafs’ head coach Mike Babcock for that matter, we hadn’t heard from Peters or any potential career move.

He is now getting back in the game - despite the KHL and NHL shut down.
