Cory Schneider lands an NHL contract

Goaltender Cory Schneider has managed to land himself an NHL contract, despite some awful playing over the last few seasons. However, it comes at a massive pay cut compared to the $6 million a year he was making with the New jersey Devils before that team bought him out.

According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Schneider is finalizing a one-year deal with the New York Islanders. It will be worth $700,000, which is the absolute minimum for an NHL contract.

There is some history between Schneider and Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello. Lamoriello was GM of the New Jersey Devils when the team traded for him with the Vancouver Canucks at the 2013 entry draft. At the time, the Canucks were trying to trade away Roberto Luongo and his huge contract but simply could not find any takers. Schneider had some good years in New jersey, but things fell apart over the last few years, with the netminder even spending some time in the minors despite his $6 million contract.

With Semyon Varlamov and newcomer Ilya Sorokin in the fold, it's doubtful Schneider will see any time playing in the NHL unless there are injuries. In the meantime, this seems like an insurance policy for the Islanders should it be needed. If Schneider isn't needed at the NHL level, his cap hit can be buried in the AHL for the season. And, who knows, perhaps Schneider can turn his fortunes around and the 34-year-old can sign a better contract next season.
