If you watch Calgary Flames games with any regularity, you know that they’re a team with many different weapons. They can beat you on the scoreboard, they can grind you down in the corners… they can even drop the gloves if things get out of hand. And finally, with Mike Smith on board, they can flat out stonewall you.

But one surprising stat uncovered after last night’s 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals shows off just how dominant the Flames have been at playing with the lead. Dating back to the start of last season, the Flames now have 40 consecutive victories when leading after two periods. Put another way: the Flames DOMINATE the third period.

That bodes well for a young team that’s trying to sharpen and hone itself into a perennial playoff performer. When the game gets tighter and when the checking gets tougher, the Flames will have been battle tested and ready for whatever comes their way.
