Crosby goes over the top for viral video Youtube star from Kenyan hockey team

NHL superstars Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon teamed up with Tim Hortons to fly the Kenya Ice Lions, the African nation’s only men’s hockey team, to Toronto to play in their first ever hockey game. You see… when you’re the only team in your entire country, you don’t have anyone to play. Just prior to taking the ice in brand new uniforms and gear provided by CCM, the Ice Lions were met face to face with their new teammates for the night: Crosby and MacKinnon.

"It's a dream to be in Canada," captain Ben Azegere told his teammates in the locker room during the video shared by Tim Hortons. "To play our first game in full gear, it's all amazing."   

But then Crosby and MacKinnon showed up, driving many of the players to tears.

"Sidney," Azegere said, "Seeing my favorite player come through the door wearing our jersey, I felt like I was in heaven."

Crosby and MacKinnon surprised the Kenyan team, but they were the ones who were left impressed by the African team's talent.

"I didn't know what to expect, but I thought those guys looked great," MacKinnon said. "It's cool to see the genuine excitement that they had, and it got us really fired up."

Tim Hortons will help fund Kenya's youth hockey league, so there will be many more games in the days ahead.

"That's the best part about the game, is how it reaches so many people," Crosby said. "Even in a place like Kenya, where you wouldn't think that there's even ice."

But Sid the Kid isn’t done there. Back in Toronto today with the rest of the Penguins to face the Toronto Maple Leafs, Crosby met back up with Azegere to give him a tour of the arena’s facilities and present him with his own #87 Crosby jersey.

How awesome is that!? The smiles and the genuine enthusiasm from Azegere... it's infectious. Here's hoping that the Pens and Leafs put on a good show for the Ice Lions captain this evening.
