As you know, goaltender Cam Ward signed a one-day contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday to retire as a member of the team.

The 35-year-old goalie, who was selected 25th overall by the Hurricanes in the 2002 NHL Draft, backstopped the Canes to their first Stanley Cup championship in 2006 and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy in his rookie season.

The Hurricanes, who made it all the way to the Eastern Conference finals this past spring, proudly congratulated and thanked Ward in several posts on social media yesterday, and one caught the attention of Bardown, who decided to write an article about it.

There is nothing wrong with that!

However, the TSN’s affiliated webpage used the title: “The Hurricanes celebrated Cam Ward’s retirement by sponsoring a post in Edmonton trolling the Oilers” and the team felt the need to fire back at their publication.

In the article, Bardown simply noted that the Hurricanes’ social media team came up with the ultimate troll job to remind Oilers fans about that Stanley Cup Final. On Thursday morning, the Canes took to Twitter to let them know this was false.

As fans gathered to see how this little feud would unfold, the Canes then felt the need to say that it was all a coincidence, adding that they love the coverage from Bardown.

“hey, we appreciate the coverage, but yesterday was about celebrating a franchise player, not trolling other teams

just a coincidence.”

Ward left the Hurricanes as a free agent last summer, signing with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 35-year-old recorded a .897 save percentage and 3.67 GAA, going 16-12-4 in 33 appearances this past season.

I guess the Hurricanes wanted to add a little drama to his stunning career!
