A curious move from the Canadiens.

The Montreal Canadiens made a curious move on Wednesday firing analytics expert Matt Pfeffer just one season after hiring him in the first place.

The move raised several eyebrows in Montreal, primarily because of the reputation, justified or not, that both head coach Michel Therrien and Marc Bergevin have regarding their feelings towards analytics. Furthermore this is coming off the heels of the P.K. Subban trade, a move that will likely cast a shadow over every other move made by this management staff for a long time.

The Subban for Shea Weber deal was derided by passionate fans in both Montreal and Nashville to be sure, but when it comes to criticism from the hockey community a large portion of it came from those from a deep analytics background, and that criticism was much more heavily directed at the Canadiens organization.

Originally while the move did garner some attention, it was when the Canadiens appeared to attempt to do some public relations damage control that people became really curious as to the motivations of this move. The Canadiens quickly reached out to the media to clarify that they would still be pursuing an analytics perspective, although when that may be was not made clear.

Whether or not that may have played a role in the Canadiens motivation to fire Pfeffer almost a year to the day after hiring him is unclear, but it;s one of the many questions being raised about this move.
