David Backes has only played 22 games in this past 2019-20 season and many pundits believe he is a perfect candidate to be bought out by the Anaheim Ducks, where he landed at the trade deadline.

And so, the question is: will the Ducks buy him out to make room on the cap space, one that will be flattened and remain the same for the upcoming season due to the COVID-19 pandemic?

Well, it sounds like Ducks general manager Bob Murray is determined to keep Backes on his roster, despite his $6 million annual salary until 2021. According to insider Andy Strickland, the Ducks have already informed Backes that they intend to keep him in Anaheim.

“The Anaheim Ducks have told David Backes they intend to keep him and expect him to be a regular in the lineup in what could be his final season. Backes is 50 games shy of a 1000 for his career and has been working with a skating coach twice a week in Minny.”

It’s a good thing to hear that Backes has been working hard at keeping his spot in the NHL. We haven’t seen the best of the veteran forward in the past season, he who has been nothing but fourth line depth for a while. He has great presence in the dressing room, and there is no doubt the Ducks and their young players will benefit from Backes’ experience and leadership.

It looks like we must ruled him out of the list of buy out candidates for his offseason.
