The shock is real, but the truth remains that team Finland beat team Canada last night, earning a 2-1 overtime victory to eliminate Canada from the 2019 World Junior Championships on home soil.

After the game the Canadian boys, and let’s keep in mind that they are merely boys as they’re all teenagers, were speechless and devastated. So… as is the case these days, some online trolls decided to take things to an inappropriate level.

Canadian captain Max Comtois, who was stopped in overtime on a penalty shot, was the victim of some truly awful comments online, with angry fans wishing him dead.

You have to put yourselves in the kids' shoes. The poor guys. The Canadians had never failed to medal on their home soil and were favourites to compete for the gold medal... it is a tough reality for them, especially for goalie Michael DiPietro, who was visibly upset after allowing the game-winning goal in overtime.

On Thursday, the Vancouver Canucks prospect shared a heartfelt message with his followers less than 24 hours after getting eliminated by Finland and revealed how proud he is to be Canadian and to represent his country. Here is what he had to say and shared on his personal Twitter account:

DiPietro's message is beautiful and reminds us that there are great people in Canada, and a handful of dumbasses ready to ruin a young man's life. Speaking of Comtois, he and his camp fired back at these online bullies with a statement sent through his agency Roy Sports Group.

If you have a chance, send these boys an encouraging message. You know they need it, and you should be proud to be represented by team at the World Juniors.
