Don Cherry is disappointed in Ron MacLean!

On Monday, Don Cherry was fired by Sportsnet and Rogers for making offensive comments about Canadian immigrants. Cherry was fired on Remembrance Day, which honors Canada’s veterans, after he said: “You people … you love our way of life, love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada.” said Grapes, who spent four decades in the NHL between his time as a player, coach and commentator.

When he was first reached to comment on his dismissal, Grapes made it clear he knew what he said and that the meant it. On Tuesday, Cherry maintained that he does not regret the things he said Saturday night on Coach’s Corner, but he just wishes he phrased his thoughts differently.

But he specifically choose his words when talking about his former Hockey Night in Canada partner Ron MacLean.

MacLean publicly apologized Sunday for Cherry’s offensive comments from the night prior, and Cherry believes his friend  “buried” him with his response.

“Very disappointing,” Cherry told Global News on Tuesday. “We’re still friends, but I was very disappointed in the way he handled it. I don’t want to go and condemn him or anything like that, but I was very disappointed.”

MacLean initially apologized on Twitter for Cherry’s remarks and followed that by issuing a second apology during Sunday’s broadcast, calling the comments “hurtful,” “discriminatory,” and “flat-out wrong.” He went on to admit he “sat there, did not catch it, (and) did not respond.”

It’s good to know Cherry still sees MacLean as his friend despite the two being forced to stop working together. On Tuesday night, Cherry also explain that if he would have been allowed to remain on the Sportsnet’s team, he would have shown contrition for misspeaking and clarified his comments.

However, it is believed he was not willing to go as far as the company wanted him to in order to keep his position.

“If I had a chance to go on this Saturday. I wish I would’ve said ‘everyone,’ ” said Cherry in an interview with CTV News. “I volunteered (to apologize), but it wasn’t enough. I can’t tell you what they asked me to do after that, but I said I wouldn’t do it.”

“They asked me to do something beyond going on Saturday and saying something or putting a tweet out or whatever. They wanted me to go beyond that and I said no, I wouldn’t do it.”

A lot has been said on the situation, but we are sure Cherry and MacLean will still have a lot more to say behind closed doors.
