Don Cherry rips the Leafs in Game 2 for 'whining.'

Talk about kicking guys while they are down.

The Toronto Maple Leafs got off to an excellent start in their first round series against the Boston Bruins in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, picking up a huge win on the road in Game 1 of the series. Although that should have provided a springboard of momentum for the Leafs in this series Game 2 completely changed the tone of this battle as it saw the Bruins completely dominate the Maple Leafs in nearly ever facet of the game on Saturday night.

Now there has been a great deal of controversy coming out of that game including possible suspensions, injuries and questions about the quality of the officiating in that contest. Never one to shy away from controversial topics the National Hockey League's surliest analyst, Don Cherry, took to the airwaves on Saturday and was quick to bury the Leafs for their behavior in Game 2. Cherry was not focused on the lines that were crossed on both sides of the ice but instead the hole that the Maple Leafs were digging for themselves in this series.

It is unquestionably true that the officials on the ice for Game 2 of this series let quite a bit of rough stuff go unpenalized but in spite of that Cherry feels that the Maple Leafs may have made things considerably worse for themselves by complaining to the officials on the ice on multiple occasions. During his segment on Coach's Corner Cherry played a short highlight reel of the constant complaining that the Maple Leafs players were doing after they were hauled down by the opposition. Cherry felt that this was having the opposite effect that the Leafs were looking for.

Cherry instead pointed to the fact that the Maple Leafs were making the on ice officials look bad, although they did a fine job of that all on their own to be fair, and added that this was something those same officials were likely to be very unhappy about. Cherry didn't go so far as to suggest that it could further bias the officials, but he was certainly hinted at it.
