Not a good look.

We are only just a few days into the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season and we've already got some rather embarrassing moments for the highlight reels and one of those moments features a rather high profile player.

On Friday night the Los Angeles Kings were facing off against state rivals the San Jose Sharks in a rivalry that has produced more and more fireworks in recent years and last night was no exception. Fans in attendance and watching at home were treated to a back and forth affair, one that would eventually require overtime to solve as regulation was not enough to determine a clear winner.

The Sharks jumped out to an early lead in the contest's opening period and after twenty minutes they found themselves with a 2 - 1 lead over the Kings, but the tide would quickly turn. The Kings managed to turn things around when a goal in the final two minutes of the first period seemed to shift the momentum in the Kings's favor. The Kings would go on to add a second goal of their own in the second period and the game was all tied up at two, but interestingly enough the Sharks broadcast didn't choose to focus on either goal as the turning point for the Kings.

Instead the Sharks broadcast drew a lot of attention to a play in the second period that thankfully did not result in a penalty call. The incident occurred between young Sharks forward Timo Meier and Los Angeles Kings' star defenseman Drew Doughty and it had more than a few Sharks fans up on arms. Some of them were furious with Doughty for the play while others were quick to point and laugh at the Kings star in an attempt to shame him for what now appears to have been a rather ugly dive.

With a little over 5 minutes gone in the second period Doughty and Meier, as well as Joe Thornton and Anze Kopitar, were involved in a b it of a scuffle along the boards when suddenly Doughty went down in a heap on the ice. Given his body language at the time it appeared as if Doughty had been badly injured, and when trainers came out to tend to him he continued to indicate that he may have been genuinely injured. Doughty was yelling and screaming on the ice and would eventually hobble off the ice with the help of team trainers, but the replay wasn't doing him any favors.

At first it seemed based on the live camera angle that Meier could have potentially slashed Doughty on the back of the leg, but upon further review it did not appear that there was much contact at all, if any. As you can see in the video below the announce team was baffled by what they saw after getting a look at several camera angles.

Unsurprisingly the Sharks post game was not kind to Doughty, and in fact insinuated that his performance was more akin to that of a Hollywood actor.

Definitely not one of Doughty's proudest moments on the ice. The game also just happened to be the debut for Russian superstar Ilya Kovalchuk as a member of the Los Angeles Kings, unfortunately for the Kings however his debut was spoiled by the fact that the Kings walked away with a loss on the evening.
