Dreger calls out Bergevin, lectures him on ridiculous Tavares trade plan!

NHL insider Darren Dreger was one of the first ones to hint at a possible interest from John Tavares to come and play for the Montreal Canadiens.

"I don’t know why I feel this way because Tavares has never said this to me directly. I’ve never heard this from Brisson or anyone deeply associated with him. I think that Tavares would like to play for the Montreal Canadiens," he had said weeks ago.

That seemed to have played with the mind of Habs general manager Marc Bergevin, and now Dreger took the air on Thursday morning on Montreal's TSN 690 to lecture the GM, as reported here on FanRag Sports

"There’s no magic wand that is going to put some sort of hex on John Tavares to get him to push away from the New York Islanders and gleefully join the Montreal Canadiens as an unrestricted free agent.

“It could happen, but there’s no magic formula to make that happen.”

Dreger also expressed what he would have done, in that - way earlier this season - if he had been in Bergevin's shoes.

"Because obviously the Montreal Canadiens didn’t utilize their cap space. They did not address their primary need. I guess they thought that Jonathan Drouin could easily morph into a top-line center in the National Hockey League, and what we’re seeing right now is that he’s not. He’s better suited to playing on the wing.

“So you need to find a centerman. And it looks like their blueline, when healthy, isn’t as bad as it was early in the season. But that too is an area of concern. With Shea Weber being dinged up now, but obviously getting older, that’s going to be an area of concern in the next couple of seasons."

Now that the Islanders have a plan together to build a new arena in Belmont Park, some believe Tavares might be more inclined to sign a contract extension with the club that selected him first overall in 2009.

We will have to wait and see, but clearly, the Habs will need to do more than just hope when it comes to landing Tavares.
