Listening to yesterday’s edition of the 31 Thoughts podcast with Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek when Marek brought up a good point:

“Is this the end of everybody drinking out of the Stanley Cup?”

It’s a time honoured tradition passed down through hockey history and because of COVID-19 and the social distancing and sanitation measures being taken to combat the virus, you have to wonder if this tradition will be abolished?

“It’s going to be like two guys hold the cup and pour champagne in it then pour it into your mouth,” added Friedman. I’m serious! Without your lips even touching it.”

“Everybody get a straw, we’re drinking out of the Stanley Cup!!

It all sounds so silly and trivial, but… it’s a real concern. Will players be allowed to drink from the Cup?

“We’re going to see the lamest Stanley Cup parties of all-time,” contends Marek.

Again it’s a small thing, but given the celebrations that we’ve seen in recent years from the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues, we’re used to seeing hockey players FINALLY cut loose after winning the Cup. Kiss that goodbye… well don’t actually kiss it. Social distancing, you know…
