Every single year EA Sports NHL, the official video game partner of the National Hockey League, releases a brand new video game in their catalog of hockey titles and one of the biggest events that surrounds that announcement each and every year is the unveiling of the cover.

Much like with other sports properties from EA the cover becomes a big deal each and every year because it usually features just a single athlete. Although there is no award associated with being on the cover of the video game there is some level of prestige associated with it due to the fact that it is often reserved for the most popular or most talented players in their respective sports.

This year gracing the cover of NHL 21 will be none other than Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin unquestionably one of the biggest stars in the game today. The Capitals recently captured a Stanley Cup and Ovechkin has continued to establish himself as one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the sport, so I doubt there will be very many objections to this decision. The Russian forward is also an international superstar outside of North America as well so there really are a lot of reasons to want a figure like Ovechkin to grace the cover of the game.

Last year the cover went to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, but the question now of course is who will be the next superstar to grace the cover of EA's popular franchise for the 2022 version of the game?
