ECHL considering bizarre name for new team
Keystone Press

The Alaska Aces were one of the most successful franchises in the ECHL. The three-time Kelly Cup champions also happened to have one of the best logos and jerseys in the league, as well. Unfortunately, the Aces and their iconic polar bear are no more. The team ceased operations following last season and will begin anew in Portland, Maine in 2018-19. But, what the team will be called may surprise you.

Among the names apparently being considered for the city’s new franchise: The Portland Wild Blueberries. That’s… interesting. They’d certainly be the only professional hockey team named after a fruit, so they’d have that going for them at the very least.

The unnamed team is holding a ‘name the team’ contest at their website and have invited fans the help choose between the Wild Blueberries, Watchmen, Mariners, Lumberjacks and Puffins.
