Jack Eichel did not hold back on the first day of the Buffalo Sabres training camp.

The 20-year-old is looking forward to lead the team to a good 2017-18 season, and knows it will be a good opportunity for him to prove he deserved to be selected second overall in the 2015 NHL draft.

"I think I have a lot to prove," Eichel said Thursday to NHL.com's Joe Yerdon

"If you look at what I've done, it hasn't been a whole lot; two mediocre seasons on a losing team," he added, "so we just need to be better as a group this year, and I think everyone went home with the mindset this summer that we wanted to get better and head into the season and hit the ground running."

His teammates have surely heard him and will want to turn the page on last season. Eichel missed several games after suffering an ankle injury last in camp. He recorded 24 goals and 33 assists in 61 games.

Eichel is also hoping to secure a long-time wealthy extension with the club, and will do all he can to make the Sabres a contender.

"It's the third year, so if there's ever a time to start winning and being a good team in this league, it's right now. I think all the guys are pretty sick of losing and not playing in the playoffs."
