Emergency call up confirms injury to the Red Wings roster.

The Detroit Red Wings have made a move that appears to indicate a significant injury on their roster.

According to an official announcement from the Red Wings organization, the team has called up goaltender Kaden Fulcher all the way up from the East Coast Hockey League. Fulcher has been playing for the Toledo Walleye and not only does he not have a single game of National hockey League experience under his belt, but he also lacks any experience at the American Hockey League level as well. The fact that he is being called up all the way to the main roster on an emergency basis would appear to indicate that there is an injury to the Wings roster.

The most likely culprit here of course is veteran goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Bernier has been sidelined with an injury since he suffered an upper bidy injury against the New Jersey Devils on Friday, and although the injury was initially reported as not serious it seems it is in fact serious enough to force Bernier to miss at least one game. Bernier was expected to undergo a medical scan following his injury on Friday and I would suspect that he has done so by now, however the results of that medical scan have not been made public and there has been no update from the Red Wings on the status of Bernier's condition.

Fulcher has had a medicore performance during his time in the ECHL, appearing in 28 games for the Walleye and recording a 3.00 goals against average and an .899 save percentage, and it does not sound like the intention is to let him play at the NHL level this evening. An update from Detroit Red Wings insider Ansar Khan has now confirmed a few more details, including the confirmation of the fact that it is indeed Bernier who will be out this evening as a result of an upper body injury. This must be the same injury that Bernier suffered on Friday against the Devils.

Additionally Khan is reporting that veteran goaltender Jimmy Howard will be taking to the net this evening which means that barring a disaster Fukcher will merely be playing backup on the bench.
