There was some minor good news regarding Ottawa Senators superstar Erik Karlsson on Thursday, but that was quickly followed by bad news that put a damper on the update.

The good news was that Karlsson was spotted at with his teammates on Thursday, and while that initially appeared to signal a return to practice for Karlsson, it was not the case.

According to Senators insider Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Karlsson took in the entire skate from the safety of the bench and furthermore head coach Guy Boucher once again confirmed that he is prepping as if Karlsson will not be available come the start of the regular season.

“I just told them to tell me when he’s going to be ready for a real practice,” Boucher said Thursday as per Garrioch's report. “Before that, to be honest with you, I don’t know. I don’t know when he’s planning to skate but at some point he will go on.

“I’m pretty sure it won’t be in three weeks, but when? Let’s wait and see when he’s able to skate for real. If he’s skating, just to go on and put some skates on, that’s not really the interest right now for me. Anything that’s positive for Erik would be great but at the same time I don’t want to get too ahead of myself and hope he’s back in a week.

“I’m expecting a long process — anything in between is a bonus.”

While Boucher would obviously not comment of a specific timetable for Karlsson to make his return, the mere fact that he doesn't think three weeks is realistic is a bad sign for Karlsson, the Senators and their fans.
