ESPN put together a panel of what they described as "22 leading names in hockey analytics community" with the goal of having this panel take an objective look at all of the offseason's big signings.

On Wednesday that panel's selections for the worst contracts of the entire summer were revealed, and unfortunately for the Toronto Maple Leafs, two of their offseason signings were ranked among the worst of the summer.

First, in the "unrestricted free agent forwards" category the Leafs ranked dead least with the signing of former New York Islander Matt Martin with him getting an approval rating of just 6.8 percent among the panel.  In fact one member of the panel described Martin as "one of the worst players to get a regular shift in the NHL."

Martin was not alone however, the Leafs also came in dead last in the "unrestricted free agent defensemen" category for their signing of defenseman Roman Polak, altohugh his approval rating of 22.7 percent was far more respectable than Martin's. The panel primary concern were his abysmal 0.19 career points per game as well as the fact that his teams have a negative shot differential with him on the ice. One panelist however did point to a possible ulterior motive from the Leafs here when he stated "it works if he fetches another second-rounder in February."

Of course the motivation for the Maple Leafs here was not to improve their scoring oppurtunties with either of these men on the ice, Martin has led the league in hits for the past several season and Polak ranked third in that category last year. So keep that in mind when viewing these ESPN rankings.
