More often than not, Evander Kane is the one fans get upset with, he who was once quite the controversial player with his off-ice antics and disrespectful behaviour.

We all remember his criminal issues too…

However, things appear to have changed ever since he was traded to San Jose and became part of the Sharks organization. He suffered a catastrophic loss last spring when he and his wife announced that they had lost their baby girl. That will make you mature quickly…

Unfortunately one thing has yet to change is the NHL and that is the presence of racism on the ice and in the stands. Kane had enough on Wednesday and decided to expose one fan who told him to get back to playing basketball.

Kane not only made his identity public but also explained how a similar comment was made to him as he was sitting in the penalty box in Denver during Game 4 of the second round series against the Colorado Avalanche.

It is however sad to say the NHL was the last major sports league to integrate players of color. The Sports Business Daily revealed that fewer than 5percent of NHL players were people of color. Kane isn’t the only one to have dealt with racist taunts: black players, such as former Shark Joel Ward and current New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban, have faced racist abuse on social media.

Four fans were banned from attending games in Chicago in 2018 after chanting “Basketball, basketball, basketball” at then-Washington Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly, and current Devils forward Wayne Simmonds had a banana thrown at him during a preseason game in 2011 when he was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Any type of discrimination, whether it be linked to race, sexuality or religion has no place in the world and that includes the hockey world.

Kane proudly exposed the fan and we hope everyone watching the game will get the message that everyone can play hockey and should be respected despite the colours they wear.

Amen, Kane!
