The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety slapped San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane with a multi game suspension on Saturday and Kane is extremely unhappy about it. So unhappy in fact that the often controversial forward has now taken to social media to slam the decision from the Department of Player Safety and the entire Department of Player Safety as a whole, including taking some direct shots at the man running that department, former NHL player George Parros.

First, the league announced on Saturday that it would be suspending Kaner for what was a rather vicious and blatant elbow to the head of Winnipeg Jets defenseman Neal Pionk. There was not much to debate on this one, Kane very clearly raised his elbow and drove it into the head of his opponent, and given his status as a repeat offender that was enough to earn the man a 3 game suspension from the NHL. Personally I have no issue with this suspension, it was quite blatant, avoidable, and it came against Kane's former team which may have also been a motivating factor in this one. Here was the NHL's full ruling:

Kane however has never been one to shy away from controversy and that was once again on full display Saturday when he blasted Parros and his department via a statement he released on social media. Here is Kane's statement unedited and in full:

The fact the NHL Department of Player Safety headed by George Parros continue to pick and choose, who and what they suspend is ridiculous! There have been countless incidents of the same nature through this season and past seasons that have gone unsuspended or fined. No one person can tell you what is or isn’t a suspension in today’s game, it’s become a complete guess. There is a major lack of consistency with NHL Department of Player Safety. A completely FLAWED system in so many ways. From the suspensions to appeal rights, it’s baffling to me how we as players agreed to this. You can’t continue to give some players a pass and throw the book at others. There has to be a outside third party making these decisions to remove the bias that transpires in this department headed by George Parros. None of it makes any sense.

The point Kane is making here is one that just about every NHL fan can relate to. It is undeniable at this point that the lack of consistency from the NHL's Department of Player Safety has become a complete joke, however Kane may have picked a rather poor time to engage in this battle. Kane's suspension is not one of those examples, it clearly warranted a suspension, but only time will tell if his statement gains any traction and potentially leads to changes in the way the NHL handles its suspensions.
