Every NHL team will pay tribute to Ted Lindsay this weekend

In case you somehow missed the news, Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay passed away earlier this week at the age of 93.

The man they called “Terrible Ted” had an enormous impact on the game that extends well beyond his four Stanley Cup championships and individual awards. Lindsay was instrumental in helping create the NHL Players Association (NHLPA) in the late 1950s, a move that was so controversial it ended up with him being traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the Chicago Blackhawks, as a result. Because of this, the NHL has honoured Lindsay’s contribution to the sport by creating the Ted Lindsay Award (Formerly the Lester B. Pearson Award) for the NHL’s most valuable player as voted on BY the players. 

Several teams have held a “moment of silence” in Lindsay’s honor prior to games this week, but Lindsay’s Red Wings have yet to play a home game since his passing. When they take on the New York Rangers at Little Caesar’s Arena tonight though, there will be a special ceremony prior to puck drop:

Even more impressive, the NHL has announced that EVERY arena around the league will pay tribute to Lindsay from March 7th - March 10th by having his name and number displayed on the arena boards.
